Nicholas Ehrmann  (EG '10) recognized by President Barack Obama for Blue Engine’s impact on the educational landscape in the United States
“Blue Engine is honored that the President recognizes our work, in particular because it underlines the importance of the issue at hand,” states Founder Nick Ehrmann. “We cannot continue to rubberstamp diplomas and shuttle kids towards higher education without the preparation they need. The biggest open secret in education today is the staggering gap between what it means to be college eligible and college ready.” (May 6, 2013)

MEDIA

Daniel B. Ravicher  (EG '03) on NPR
The Public Patent Foundation (PUBPAT) challenges human gene patents before the Supreme Court of the United States: “There is no way to overstate the importance of this case to the future of science and medicine. In the view of Myriad and its supporters in the biotech and pharmaceutical industries, patents are the keys to making these medical discoveries possible. Their opponents, including leading medical groups and Nobel Prize-winning scientists, contend that Myriad's patent improperly puts a lock on research and medical diagnostic testing.” (April 15, 2013)

Elizabeth Hausler Strand (EG '04) in World Economic Forum
What Latin America needs to know about earthquakes:“The earthquake in Chile demonstrated that strict building codes and standards can greatly reduce losses and destruction in even the largest earthquakes. "Seated a couple of seats ahead of me was a boy, who was struggling to communicate with the bus conductor about where he wanted to go. It took me time to realise that the boy was hearing impaired," he recalls. "There are hardly any opportunities for these people," he adds. (May 6, 2013)

Nicholas Ehrmann  (EG '10) in The New York Times
Moving beyond preparing students to be college eligible to making them ready for the rigor of college at Blue Engine:“Despite its modest size and short track record, Blue Engine has already seized the attention of educators and attracted notice from President Obama. Last year, in its schools, as a result of the program, the number of students who met the “college ready” standard — scoring above 80 on their Regents exams in algebra, geometry or English language arts — nearly tripled, from 49 to 140.
